Termite detection. Male technician using an acoustic insect detection system to check timber for termites. There are some termites on the damaged wood at far left. Termites (order Isoptera) feed on wood and can damage buildings and wooden artefacts. The sounds made by the termites as they eat the wood are amplified and filtered for analysis. Once detected, the infestation can be treated by fumigation or with liquid or solid insecticides. This system is called INADEC. Photographed in France.
