Pest control. Female entomologist carrying out research on synthetic pheromones for insect traps. Insect pheromones are odours produced by insects to attract each other for reproduction. Traps baited with artificial pheromones are used to control insect pests. The traps act as early warning systems, allowing the detection of adult insect emergence and the monitoring of pest populations. This enables insecticide to be sprayed only when and where it is needed.
