Fertiliser. Tractor applies a chemical solution of fertiliser which contains nitrogen, in this case to a field of young maize, Zea mays. Plants need certain chemical elements in order to grow properly and make complex molecules such as proteins. Intensive agriculture can deplete the levels of these chemicals, so fertiliser has to be added. Nitrogen is one of the most important chemicals needed by plants. Maize crops heavily deplete nitrogen levels in soils. Photographed in Illinois, USA.
