Biological pest control. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Verticillium sp. fungus (yellow) growing on the siphuncle (excretory tube) of an aphid (green). Aphids are major pests of crops, feeding on plant sap and severely damaging the plant when present in large numbers. They can be controlled with chemical pesticides, but these have adverse effects on beneficial insects and the environment. Biological pest control is the use of naturally occurring agents to kill pests. In this case, the fungus can grow on and kill the aphid. Magnification: x1850 when printed 10cm tall.
