A view of the city of Medellin at dusk. Medellin is the second largest city of Colombia, with a population of 1,468,089 (1985 census). The city has become infamous as the centre of the illegal production of drugs in Colombia, and is said to be controlled by so-called 'drugs barons'. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Medellin has seen a major effort by the Colombian government to eliminate drugs production in the region.
