Caption

Sydney. Near true-colour SPOT-1 satellite image of Sydney, Australia, and the surrounding area. North is towards the top, the Pacific Ocean is on the right. Sydney lies on the outlet of the Parramatta River (centre right). In its centre is the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge, just east of the harbour. The white promontory to the right of the bridge is the Sydney Opera House. South of the city is Botany Bay, so-named by the explorer James Cook in 1780 after the discovery of many plant species. In the north of the Bay is the city's airport. Dark green areas north and south are national parks. Image by the French satellite SPOT-1, December.
