Caption

Mexicali. Infrared satellite image of Mexicali (at far left) on the Mexican-American border. In the infrared range green vegetation is red, water is black, buildings are light blue/grey, bare ground is yellow/blue & salt flats are white. The border with America forms the northern edge of Mexicali whilst the nearest American town is Calexico (at upper left). The Colorado desert is in the upper frame. The irrigated fields produce cotton, alfalfa, vegetables, grapefruit and dates. The American fields are larger than their Mexican counterparts due to increased mechanisation. Image taken by the SPOT-3 satellite in October.
