Caption

Phnom Penh. Infrared satellite image of Phnom Penh capital city of Cambodia. North is at top. In the infrared range vegetation appears red, buildings are blue/grey, clear water is black, sediment- rich water is blue and bare ground is grey. Phnom Penh stands at the junction of the Mekong (at top right) and Tonle Sap (at top centre) rivers. The Mekong carries more sediment than the Tonle Sap and the distinction between their waters can be seen downstream. To the west of Phnom Penh is its airport whilst there are extensive field systems to the north-east and south. Image taken by the French SPOT-1 satellite in December.
