Haifa. Infrared satellite image of Haifa (at lower left), northern Israel. North is at top. In the infrared range lush vegetation is red, urban areas are light blue/grey, bare ground is grey, and water is black. Haifa stands on the slopes of Mount Carmel. Acre is built on the promontory just to Haifa's north, and Nazareth is at lower right. Haifa is Israel's most important industrial city and port. Israel's border with Lebanon appears as a jagged white line at upper right. Israel's fertile coastal plain shows in strong contrast to the arid hills to its east. Image taken by the French SPOT-1 satellite in September.
