Caption

Athens and surroundings, satellite image. North is at top. Water is black, vegetation is green, barren land is brown, urban areas are blue. Athens (blue, upper right) is the capital city of Greece. To its left, the Isthmus of Corinth connects the mainland with the Peloponnese Peninsula (left) and also divides the Saronic (right) and Corinthian (left) gulfs. The mountainous terrain and indented coastline are clearly seen. This 180-kilometre- wide image was taken on 14 September 1987, in visible & infrared wavelengths, with the Thematic Mapper (TM) sensor on a NASA Landsat satellite.
