San Francisco Bay, USA, from the International Space Station (ISS). North is towards lower right. Some 7 million people live in San Francisco (grey, centre) and the other cities round the bay. Bright red and green salt pans are at lower left and right, while forests (dark green) cover the surrounding hills. Several rivers drain (lower right) into the 85-kilometre-wide bay. Silt-laden water (green) contrasts with the dark blue of the Pacific Ocean (across top). Tides sweep water out of the mouth of the bay, while reflected sunlight (white) shows wave patterns (upper left). The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 380 kilometres. Photographed on 21 April 2002.
