Athens, Greece, seen from the International Space Station (ISS). North is at upper left. Athens is famous for its historic ruins. These are mostly in the area at upper right (green spaces) and include the Parthenon, which lies on top of a hill called the Acropolis. A harbour is seen at bottom right, and clouds (white, upper left) and cloud shadows (lower right) are also seen. Mountains rise above the city at lower left. City roads and buildings surround the sprawling industrial centre. Over 3 million people live in Athens, Greece's capital city. This area is around 10 kilometres wide. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 380 kilometres. Photographed on 7 October 2002.
