Sao Paulo, Brazil, at night from the International Space Station (ISS). North is at upper left. The city (centre) lies 50 kilometres from the port of Santos (centre right) on the Atlantic coast. Sao Paulo is Brazil's largest city, with a population of some 17 million people. The different colours (white, grey, pink) mark different ages and types of street lights. Bright lines show roads, but the surrounding countryside and the ocean are mostly dark. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 380 kilometres. Photographed on 12 April 2003.
