Chicago, USA, seen at night from the International Space Station (ISS). North is at lower left. The city (centre), its suburbs, and other cities run some 90 kilometres around a bay (seen at left) of Lake Michigan. Major roads are seen radiating out from the bright lights of the city centre, and the planned grid-pattern of the roads is seen. Nearly 8 million people live in the area in and around Chicago. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 380 kilometres. Photographed on 7 October 2003.
