Cairo, satellite image. North is at top. Cairo is the capital city of Egypt and, as of 2005, the largest city in Africa with a population of 15 million. It lies on the banks of the River Nile (centre), just south of the point where the river fans out into a delta. The narrow strip surrounding the Nile contains most of the population and agriculture in Egypt, with its waters being used to irrigate the desert soil to produce crops.
