New York terrorist attack. Satellite image showing smoke (lower left) rising from the smouldering ruins of the destroyed World Trade Center, New York City, USA. North is at top. On 11 September 2001, terrorists flew two hijacked passenger planes into the two towers of the World Trade Centre (also called the Twin Towers). Both buildings collapsed around an hour later, killing thousands of people. This image was obtained on 15 September 2001. The debris continued to smoulder for weeks after the attack. The clean-up operation was not completed until May 2002. The white areas at centre right are clouds, casting the shadows at upper right. Image taken by the Ikonos satellite.
