New York. Satellite image of New York City, USA, and the surrounding area. North is at top. Urban areas are grey, rural areas are green and water is blue. The area seen is about 45 kilometres across. New York City (NYC), mostly at right, is separated from New Jersey (left) by the Hudson River (down centre). Staten Island (bottom left) is also part of NYC. Above it is Newark Bay, New Jersey, into which flow the Passaic (left) and Hackensack (right) rivers. The other four areas of NYC are Manhattan (island, centre), the Bronx (upper right), Queens (centre right) and Brooklyn (lower right). These last two are on Long Island. Long Island Sound (top right) and New York Bay (lower centre) are joined by the East River. Image taken by the Landsat 5 satellite in the summer of 1997.
