Nairobi, Kenya, satellite image. Nairobi, located in Kenya's south central highlands, is the country's capital and largest city. It was founded in 1899 as a supply depot for the Ugandan Railway and grew rapidly, becoming the capital of British East Africa in 1907 and the capital of the newly independent Kenya in 1963. At top centre to right is the Nairobi River. At bottom right is the railway station, depot and Nairobi's industrial centre. Nairobi is the distribution centre for the area's agriculture, as well as manufacturing food, automobiles, chemicals, textiles, glass and much more. Taken by the Ikonos satellite on 18 October 2001.
