Tripoli, Libya, satellite image. Tripoli, located in the north west of Libya on the Mediterranean sea, is the country's capital and largest city. The city, which is on the edge of a large oasis, was founded in the 7th century by the Phoenicians. Libya's chief seaport is at top. It handles both passenger and container ships. Tripoli is also the country's commercial, industrial and administrative centre. Taken by the Ikonos satellite on 6 February 2003.
