London skyline. Thermogram of the City of London, UK. A thermogram shows the variation in temperature on the surface of an object, measured by the long-wave infrared radiation it emits. The temperature scale is colour-coded and runs from blue (coldest) through green, yellow, orange and red to pink (warmest). St Mary's Axe, (the Gherkin), is at left. Large metropolitan areas experience a phenomenon known as the Urban Heat Island (UHI), which is the name given to the dome of warm air that occurs over built-up areas.
