Landfill site. Bulldozer levelling piles of rubbish at a landfill site. Landfill is a common method of disposing of domestic wastes. The waste is used to fill a large excavated pit, and is mechanically compacted. When the pit is full, it is covered with soil. Problems associated with badly-managed landfills include the leaching of hazardous chemicals into the local water table and the long-term production of methane by rotting waste. Landfill sites are now increasingly regulated in developed countries to avoid such problems, and to allow later use of the land for leisure or housing projects.
