Waste landfill site. A bulldozer moves refuse at a dump used for the disposal of domestic and commercial waste. Landfill sites are depositories for 90% of the world's domestic waste materials. The type of material disposed of in a landfill must be controlled to prevent toxins leaching into the local groundwater. Leaching may also be prevented by lining landfill sites with synthetic materials or impermeable clay. In time the dump may be covered with soil and landscaped to provide leisure facilities. Gases generated by biological processes in the covered site (notably methane) may be recovered.
