Slag heap. Land contaminated by slag heaps from an old sulphuric acid plant. Slag consists of various waste impurities produced in metallurgical smelting and combustion processes. The smelting of copper, lead and zinc is the basis of sulphur dioxide production in some sulphuric acid plants. Sulphur dioxide and water are the basic materials used in the manufacture of sulphuric acid. Photographed near a residential area in Bilbao, Spain.
