Caption

Slag heap. Discarded slag or scoria, the residue left after smelting a metallic ore. This waste comes from a copper smelter (not seen). Environmental damage may result from such waste, damaging plant and animal life if the copper is leached into the soil. In high quantities copper is toxic to animal and plant life and can lead to death. Photographed in Greenwood, British Columbia, Canada.
