Asbestos waste. Pile of discarded corrugated asbestos sheets. Asbestos comprises silicate minerals, and was formerly used as insulation in the building industry. It has now been banned in many countries as it has been found that if the asbestos degrades and is exposed, asbestos fibres will be released into the air. These fibres are small and can be inhaled deep into the lungs. As the body is unable to degrade them, lung damage due to asbestos (asbestosis) and lung cancers, such as mesotheliomas, result.
