Landfill site in disused clay quarry. Landfill sites are used to dispose of about 90% of the world's domestic waste. The type of material dumped must be controlled to prevent chemical toxins leaching into local groundwater. Leaching may also be prevented by lining the site with synthetic materials (blue) or impermeable clay. In time, the dump may be covered with soil, landscaped and sold to developers. The gas flare (centre) burns off gases produced by decomposition, preventing hazardous build ups of pressure. Photographed in Aldridge, West Midlands, UK.
