Car exhaust fumes. Fumes from a car exhaust belch out in front of a young boy, making him cough. Car engines produce a number of harmful gases such as nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons from the incomplete combustion of fuel. This air pollution is implicated in a variety of respiratory problems in children, including the development of asthma.
