Air pollution. Photochemical air pollution, or smog, over Los Angeles, California, USA. It results from hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides, mainly from vehicle exhausts, reacting together in the presence of sunlight. The pollution limits visibility, damages plants and irritates the eyes. High levels of smog can be extremely dangerous, especially to the very young and old, and those with existing respiratory complaints.
