Water pollution. Algal bloom in water due to water pollution with fertilisers (eutrophication). The fertiliser in the water allows algae to grow much faster than usual. The algae form mats that block light to the plants beneath. The dying plants are broken down by bacteria in the water, which deprives the water of oxygen. This leads to the death of aquatic animals that need oxygen in the water, such as fish. In this way, the entire habitat may become barren. Photographed in marshland by the Thames Estuary, London, England.
