Berkeley Pit in the Silver Bow Creek/ Butte Area Superfund site, Montana. The highly toxic water in the pit is 875 feet deep, with a surface area of 140 acres. The wastewater is pumped to a treatment plant where the copper is precipitated out, and then the water is returned to the pit.
