Caption

Marine industrial pollution. Aerial view along the shore of Lake Erie, showing a large sediment plume in the water. This plume was formed by deposition of solid wastes from nearby steel mills. The dark patch at centre is where the outflow mixes with the lake water, the flow being of sufficient velocity to keep fine particles in suspension. As the velocity of the water drops further from the outflow, the particles are able to settle, forming the sediment fan.
