Pollution resulting from the Gulf War, 1991. This photograph, taken from the space shuttle Atlantis in early April 1991, shows the remnants of a massive oil spill as it makes its way through the Straits of Hormuz. The spill, a legacy of Iraqi occupation of Kuwait, is turning the surrounding region into an ecological disaster zone. The sheen of the oil film is revealed by the sunglint. Note that while still being mostly intact, the slick is beginning to disperse upon meeting the open ocean currents of the Arabian Sea (just outside the Straits). North is to lower left. Iran is to the left and bottom. The peninsula at upper right is part of Oman. The Gulf of Oman is top right.
