Oil covered seabird. Worker holds a guillemot (Uria aalge) covered in crude oil after an oil spill disaster. This oil spill occurred in February 1996 on the south coast of Wales when the oil tanker Sea Empress ran aground on the approach to Milford Haven. An estimated 70,000 tons of light crude oil was lost (about half the total cargo). The oil then polluted much of the neighbouring coastline of sandy beaches and rocky shore, affecting plants and animals.
