Beached oil slick. Uniformed military personnel wading in an oil slick by a beach. The oil slick is from the wreck of the Torrey Canyon, one of the first supertankers. Detergent was spread to disperse the oil, but this also killed much wildlife. The Torrey Canyon ran aground off the Cornish coast of Britain in 1967. It polluted 150 kilometres of coastline in what was the first of the big oil disasters.
