Caption

Oil spill. Coloured Envisat satellite image of oil slicks (black) from the wrecked tanker Prestige off the coast of Spain, on 17th November 2002. The Prestige (white dot at the end of the slick at lower left) was carrying 77,000 tons of oil when she ran into a storm. Her hull cracked in high seas, releasing part of her cargo. Salvage vessels attempted to drag her away from the coast, but she split in two and later sank. Oil spills can cause serious environmental damage. Colours do not represent scientific interpretation of the data.
