Asbestos monitoring. Technician wearing a protective suit and breathing mask for protection against asbestos. Asbestos, a fibrous mineral, is a pollutant and health hazard when its fibres are inhaled into the lungs. Exposure to asbestos fibres can cause both lung cancer and the lung disease asbestosis. Asbestos was widely used in the past as a building insulation material and a fire retardant. Many older buildings still contain substantial quantities. This technician may be about to remove some asbestos from a building.
