Radioactive pollution monitoring. Gloved hands placing a sample of food in a detector during a test for radioactive contamination. Samples of food are regularly taken from markets and analysed to check that they do not contain levels of radioactivity above set safety limits. Radioactive pollution may arise from nearby nuclear power stations or natural sources. Regardless of their source, radioactive materials can cause severe health problems during prolonged exposure, the most obvious being the dramatically increased risk of cancer. Photographed at a public health institute in Milan, Italy.
