Marine pollution research. Testing of the ECREPOL device for cleaning up oil slicks. It is towed by a boat and the two floating booms (lower centre) are spread to form a V-shape. This guides the oil through a hole (lower right) into a large trailing plastic bag (not seen). When the bag is full, the device automatically closes it and starts filling another one. The bags of oil then float on the sea as they await recovery by another boat. ECREPOL is a design of the MERCLEAN subsidiary of the GEOCEAN group. Photographed in December 2002.
