Environmental protection. Hands clasping a tree trunk. This represents the environmental issue of protecting trees, as well as the wider issue about protecting the environment. Trees are often felled to provide wood and space for farming. If this is done irresponsibly, habitat destruction and soil erosion can result. Trees also play an important role in regulating the Earth's atmosphere. Plants use carbon dioxide from the air to build new plant material, thus acting as a carbon sink. Burning the plants releases this carbon as carbon dioxide that can contribute to climate change. Renewable and sustainable forestry practices can avoid many of these problems. Photographed in Sweden.
