Traditional Sami drum. The Sami are an indigenous people inhabiting northern Scandinavia. This drum is a rare example of a ceremonial drum used by the Sami in Pre-Christian times. During the 17th century, the majority of these drums were destroyed by the Christians. The drum is decorated with symbols representing gods, disease family and other elements of life. Photographed at the Alta museum, Norway.
