Ancient Egyptian Temple of Kom Ombo. Stone pillars with an elaborately carved cornice, engravings and a low perimeter wall covered with hieroglyphic writing, are features of this temple. Hieroglyphs ("sacred carving") are symbols, here inscribed in rock, which made up ancient Egyptian writing. The man in the foreground conducts repairs to damaged areas of the perimeter wall. By plastering over and smoothing gauged out areas of rock, further weathering of the wall is prevented. And vandals are dissuaded from chipping away at already weak- ened parts of the temple. The Temple of Kom Ombo is situated at Kom Ombo, on the east bank of the Nile River.
