Housesteads Roman fort. Aerial photograph of the archaelogical remains of Housesteads Roman fort. Housesteads is the best preserved of the sixteen Roman forts built along the length of Hadrian's Wall. Built circa AD124, it would have contained a garrison of around 800-1000 soldiers.
