Europe, true-colour satellite image. North is at top. The taller mountain ranges are capped with snow (white). The southern countries are more barren (yellow) compared to the vegetation (green) seen elsewhere. This is a perspective view over an area 35 degrees of longitude wide. The cylindrical projection used here introduces distortion into the scale: the area at the top of image is about 1400 kilometres across, while the area at the base of the image is about 3300 kilometres across. From top to bottom, the area shown covers over 35 degrees of latitude, some 3900 kilometres. Image obtained using the MODIS sensors. MODIS sensors are carried on the Terra and Aqua satellites.
