MODEL RELEASED. Reading a compass. Boy reading a compass being held in his father's hand. A compass contains a magnetized metal strip, here an arrow that is free to rotate around the centre of the circle. Because it is magnetized, the arrow will point to the magnetic North Pole, which is close to the geographic North Pole. The compass is used to find out which direction is North, and can be set so that any compass direction can be followed. A compass is usually used together with a map to travel in the correct direction from one place to another.
