Heartburn is caused by the presence of stomach acid in the oesophagus causing a painful burning sensation in the chest and inflammation of the lining of the oesophagus. It can be caused by overeating, eating acidic or spicy foods, or drinking alcohol or caffeinated drinks. Treatment is with over the counter antacids.
