Emergency defibrillation. Doctor holding defibrillation electrode paddles. The paddles are used to deliver an electric current to a heart with a life-threatening rhythm, as occurs during a heart attack. The current stops the rhythm and allows the heart to restart with a normal one. Defibrillation is also used to restart a heart that has stopped (cardiac arrest).
