Botox treatment. Patient having botox injected into his upper lip. Botox is a neurotoxin used for cosmetic purposes. The toxin is obtained from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. This bacterium causes botulism, a form of bacterial food poisoning. Small, safe amounts of botox are injected into facial muscles, paralysing the muscles and smoothing wrinkles. One treatment can last for between 3 and 6 months.
