Obstetric ultrasound. Obstetrician using an ultrasound transducer to scan the abdomen of a pregnant woman. The transducer (held against the abdomen) emits high frequency sound waves that are echoed back and used to create an image of the foetus inside the mother's womb, which is displayed on a monitor. This is a safe,non-invasive method of assessing the health ofthe developing foetus.
