Obstetric ultrasound. Expectant parents listening to an obstetrician explain an ultrasound scan of the foetus inside the mother's abdomen. The image is obtained by an transducer (held against the abdomen), which emits high frequency sound waves that are echoed back and used to create an image of the foetus inside the mother's womb. This is a safe, non-invasive method of assessing the health of the developing foetus.
