Obstetric ultrasound. Obstetrician using an ultrasound transducer to scan of the abdomen of a pregnant woman in her thirties. The transducer (held against her abdomen) emits high frequency sound waves that are echoed back and used to create an image of the foetus inside the mother's womb, which is displayed on the monitor. This is a safe, non- invasive method of assessing the health of the developing foetus.
